52 Things to Do and See in Union County, North Carolina #5 Extreme Ice

February 4, 2011

Established in 1842, Union County North Carolina is one of the fastest growing counties in NC.  Situated in the South Central Piedmont area of NC with the population approximately 193,000 and approximately 643 square miles of land this beautiful county boasts lots of things to do and see.  This ongoing Blog will highlight 52 of those things featuring a new place every week.

#5) Extreme Ice Center - Opened in 2006 is a great place to introduce skating to little ones through lessons, have a birthday party, watch a hockey game, or just skate as a family for fun!  My little one took skating lessons and had a ball!  We have attended several parties and hockey games and had a ball every time.

There is also a Pro Shop on site to purchase anything you might need for lessons or hockey featuring brand name gear! There is an adult broomball league as well for those not quite adventurous enough for hockey!  Lots of fun to watch.

They are located at 4705 Indian Trail Fairview Road just off Hwy 74.  The website is very informative so give it a browse at http://www.xicenter.com/.

52 Things to do and see in Union County, NC – #3 – Public Libraries

January 19, 2011

Established in 1842, Union County North Carolina is one of the fastest growing counties in NC. Situated in the South Central Piedmont area of NC with the population approximately 193,000 and approximately 643 square miles of land this beautiful county boasts lots of things to do and see. This ongoing Blog will highlight 52 of those things featuring a new place every week. 3) Public Libraries – Union County has some of the best public libraries around I have found! The people are so helpful and nice. They actually like their jobs!! My son is seven and Mr. Inquiry already. The librarians are so patient with him and always help him find the perfect book no matter how long it takes. There are so many events, book clubs for all ages, readings for children, computer classes, Author events, etc! The list goes on. My favorite location is in Indian Trail. They have a little kids corner with plush chairs for the adults and tables for reading and working while the children find their books and read. Sometimes it can get a little loud in there but I think that is usually just before a toddler storytime or some other event with young children. With four locations there is bound to be one near you. Check out in Monroe on East Windsor Street, Waxhaw on South Providence, Marshville on Hasty Street and Indian Trail on Unionville-Indian Trail Road. Check the website for hours and closings. There’s a very user friendly website with convenient book hold and ability to check your account and renew books from home! Surf http://www.union.lib.nc.us/ and stop in today!!

2) Opened in 2006 with generous hours the Waxhaw Skatepark on Caldwell Street is a fun place for kids to gather and ride skateboards to express themselves. I have seen this park and it appears to be a fun place for a tween and up crowd on the weekend.  There is a kiddie park with swings and a jungle gym close by for smaller kids.  The park boasts plenty of parent friendly benches and restroom facilities.

1) WCWAA – Wesley Chapel Weddington Athletic Association

Located on Weddington Road (HWY 84). WCWAA is a non-profit organization run by volunteer coaches offering sports for area children. Sports include baseball, basketball, cheerleading, football, lacrosse, soccer and softball to name a few. They also have a Challenger Sports program for children with special needs. Work is constantly being done on the fields to improve and keep them in great shape. My kids have played sports here for years and we have been very pleased with the programs.

Sign-ups for Spring 2011 sports is starting the first week of the new year and some sports fill quickly. Registration online is easy and user friendly. WCWAA is not the cheapest on price per sport but the quality has made up for that in my experience with soccer, football and baseball.
